Laser vein treatment: what it treats (and what it doesn’t)
Visible veins and redness are one of the most common things people ask me about, and also one of the most misunderstood. A lot of people assume any redness on the face or legs is the same problem, and it’s not. So let’s clear up what laser vein treatment actually does.
Laser vein treatment uses targeted light energy that gets absorbed by the hemoglobin in blood, which heats and collapses the small, visible blood vessels causing the redness or the vein itself. Your body then reabsorbs the collapsed vessel over the following weeks. It’s precise. It’s targeting the vessel itself, not the surrounding skin, which is why it’s effective on things like facial spider veins, broken capillaries, and small visible veins that show up around the nose, cheeks, or chin.
Here’s what it’s genuinely good for: visible facial veins, redness from rosacea, broken capillaries from sun damage or old breakouts, and general flushing that doesn’t go away on its own. If you’ve got a specific vessel or patch of redness you can point to in the mirror and say “that, right there,” this is very likely the treatment that addresses it.
Here’s what it’s not for: overall pigment or sun spots (that’s a different laser, typically Q-Switch or IPL), texture or scarring (that’s more in microneedling’s lane), and volume loss (that’s an injectable conversation). I bring this up because a lot of people come in wanting “the redness gone” when what they’re actually describing is a mix of vascular redness and pigment, and the honest answer is that it might take more than one type of treatment to fully address it. I’d rather tell you that upfront than treat the wrong thing and have you disappointed with the result.
One thing that makes vein treatment a little different from some of our other laser services: it doesn’t carry the same seasonal restrictions that pigment-focused treatments do. Because we’re targeting blood vessels rather than melanin, you can do this treatment any time of year, including through the summer, without the same sun exposure concerns.
Most people see visible improvement within a couple of weeks as the treated vessels fade, though depending on how many veins we’re addressing, it can take more than one session for full results. There’s minimal downtime. You might see some temporary redness right after treatment, but most people are comfortable going right back to their day.
If you’ve got visible veins or persistent redness you’re ready to deal with, this is one of the more straightforward treatments we offer, and it’s a great one to knock out this time of year.
Book a complimentary consultation and I’ll take a look and tell you honestly whether vein treatment is the full answer or part of a bigger plan.
